The latest roundup of community safety related news this week. Don’t forget previous weekly editions are online.
General News
“Help your kids to enjoy a safe and happy experience on the internet”. The July campaign from Get Safe Online was all about keeping kids safe from harm online (especially as the holidays approached). View the flyer here and share it around.
The new Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP) coordinated by Sergeant Shaun Pattinson, will work closely with the local services and schools to take a proactive approach to alcohol education, to ensure that young people are equipped to make the right decisions about issues including drugs, anti-social and criminal behaviour. Residents in Grimsby East are being asked to complete this online survey. Read more info.
Scams and Fraud Awareness
A new AI powered tool can help you know whether that message is a scam or not. ASK Silver works from WhatsApp. You send it a screenshot or photo of the message and it has a think and advises you whether it might be a scam or not (and then helps you report it). Visit https://www.ask-silver.com/ to learn more and to register (I recommend Chrome browser for signing up). Give it a go and see what you think. I’d be interested in feedback.
FraudWatch (Humberside) have a series of leaflets on their website that are useful to read and share. Try this one to start with about reporting scams. The others are here.
Police related Updates
Learn about Op Prowess. Hotspot policing. Crime reduction partnership.
A Safer Streets focus on the Rural Task Force. Written for East Riding, but this article introduces the Rural Task Force which of course covers North East Lincolnshire too.
Community Safety related
OurWatch have updated their website with a large number of resources about tackling loneliness in the community. Visit https://www.ourwatch.org.uk/crime-prevention/reducing-risk-toolkits/loneliness-and-vulnerability to view all the resources and to share in your own community to see if you can help.
Local areas
Grimsby Town Centre: Top Town PSCO Kerry-Anne Leaning writes a story about supporting a victim of stalking. And then features in her own feel-good story about how the local community has crowned her ‘Town Queen’!
Neighbourhood Watch
The OurWatch annual conference will be a bit different this year. In order to encourage many more NW Coordinators to ‘attend’, the conference will be online/virtual during the week starting 22nd September 2025. More details coming soon, but hopefully local coordinators will be able to join in some interesting sessions that don’t require a trip to another part of the country. Put the week in your diary and keep an eye on OurWatch or our weeknotes.
