Welcome to Weeknotes – a roundup of community safety news over the past few weeks. Remember that previous editions of this news summary are online.
Community Safety related
If you’re a user of the MyCommunityAlert system (and if not, why not?) then there is an open survey asking for your feedback about the system. Complete the survey here (should take around 5mins).
This week has been Safer Business Action Week. Police have been out and about engaging with businesses, but VANEL has also been supporting this through our connection to GRIP. Our team have been out and about in Cleethorpes talking to small businesses about the GRIP radio system.
The total value of parcels stolen across the UK rose to £376.6 million in the last year, rising from £204 million in 2023. A serious issue. Lots of details in a report about this here.
A question arose at our recent community safety event in Cleethorpes about Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs). There are seven Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) in place across North East Lincolnshire and these help the Council and Police tackle anti social behaviour of different types across the borough. They were recently refreshed so you might be interested to understand what PSPOs are; which ones cover our area and what they mean for community safety locally. Lots of detailed information on NELC website here.
Policing related
The Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner has published their report for the past year. Read it here.
And in recent news you’ve probably seen that the government has decided to close down Police and Crime Commissioners nationally by 2028. They’re still around for now but this will change Policing approaches over time. There’s an update from Jonathan Evison, PCC, here.
Minimal monstrous behaviour this Halloween and Bonfire period
Scams related
FraudWatch have issued their latest Trigger Alert (#36) about the issues of scams and fraud when buying and selling online.
Citizens Advice have just concluded a month long Scams Awareness campaign (their info page here). A reminder that we have a variety of leaflets regarding scams available at VANEL (including those from Citizens Advice). Feel free to pop into 82 Grimsby Road at any time to pick up information to help avoid scams.
Get Safe Online has also been running a campaign- to help people stay safe when shopping online (particularly relevant in the buildup to Christmas). Read their advice here and share with others.
Neighbourhood Watch
The November edition of the Ourwatch newsletter is out.
Local initiatives
Sidney Sussex: This week VANEL hosted a Community Safety Event at 82 Grimsby Road funded by Sidney Sussex Ward Councillors and supported by Police, Victim Support and other local partners. If you’re local and missed it then our next event is Wed 3rd Dec, 11-12noon when we have a simple Police Drop-in at the offices. Contact VANEL for more info.
East Marsh: There’s some positive work going on around Grant Thorold Park at the moment with the startup of a new, resident led Neighbourhood Watch Group. VANEL and the local ward councillors are pushing to establish more Neighbourhood Watch Groups in East Marsh, so if you’re interested talk to Karl at VANEL.
South Ward: Police, Fire and VANEL were at an event at Grange Community Centre recently talking to residents about community safety and their local concerns at a family event organised by LHP. (Featured here)
