Thinking of installing CCTV at home? Here’s some advice from Humberside Police…
With CCTV systems becoming more affordable and there being more options available, more people are considering fitting CCTV at their homes.
What should you consider when deciding whether to fit a CCTV system or not.
- Decide what features you would like the system to have, some examples are – motion alert, night vision or viewable on a smart phone.
- Decide if you are going to buy it and fit it yourself or get a company to supply and fit it.
- Consider using a company who belongs to either the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) or the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB) to supply and fit your CCTV.
- If you are going to buy the CCTV and fit it yourself, consider using Secured by Design accredited products.
- Use signage to highlight that you have CCTV.
- Make sure you have suitable external lighting that works well with your CCTV, a bright light shining towards a camera will cause glare and reduce the quality of the footage.
- Read up on legislation that covers home CCTV systems – this can be located on the Information Commissioners Office Website.
